There is no doubt as to how technology revolutionized the way people live today. Many things that were unthinkable in the past are now parts of reality. One of the things that proved difficult in the days gone by is the system of homes schools. Before, studying at home was a luxury that only the elite, rich people can afford. Hiring private tutors were the only possible means of doing education at home. But now with a more standardized system of education coupled with the many possibilities afforded by technology, learning from homes schools is very possible indeed.

The most crucial and critical part when engaging in homes schools is the decision to study at home. For many people, home education is education may rather be the only option especially for those who have physical disabilities or security issues. However, the option of studying at home is now extended to most anyone. Nevertheless, the decision to gain education from homes schools is a very difficult one to make, something that is to be taken seriously. The advantages of learning from regular schools with regular classmates and teachers are quite obvious. Bur for some, such benefits have to be given up for certain reasons. Before delving into home education one should first carefully think if it is the appropriate thing for ones situation. It is important to weigh all pros and cons of studying at home before making the final choice whether to pursue it or not.

Once the decision to engage in homes study, it is then important to prepare ones self for this endeavor. First the home where the education will take place should be carefully arranged and organized in a way that would make it conducive for studying and learning. Afterwards it is important to make the proper arrangements with the school that would be providing the education system at home. Not all schools are open for home education and it is thus important to source out different educational institutions in ones area.

When the arrangements with the school has been made, it is then important to identify with that school to keep the students mind focused. A home student should feel as close as possible as to how a regular student would feel in the campus. This can be done by obtaining materials that are associated with schools, such as ID cards, school colors and emblems and the like. It is then also important to set up a schedule that should be followed by the home student strictly. It is usually beneficial to set the schedule in accordance to the schedule of the partner school, this way the home student would be synchronized with his or her peers. The record keeping system should also be prepared as this is very important in observing the home students progress.

Part of the preparation for homes schools is learning and understanding the laws that govern this type of education. Each state have their own detailed information for homes schools and it is necessary to learn these details. It is also important to choose a good curriculum for the home student to follow. It is best to consult partner schools regarding the current curriculum trends in ones area, to ensure that the home student learns enough at least to get by.

Home schooling is a unique educational experience. It can be difficult for many, but if prepared very well, it can be a valuable mode of learning which can be comparable to regular schooling.

Starting a homeschool will involve a lot of research, investigation, studying and making inquiries before a homeschool begins. Parents who are looking into homeschooling to educate their children should find state and local homeschooling groups, as they will provide the best kind of information on homeschooling in your area.

On the internet, parents can also discover homeschool websites wherein it allows you to ask and discuss your options about homeschooling, as they will provide you with a variety of information as well as help you get started. The more that you investigate and communicate with others regarding your plan to homeschool, the more that you will learn and discover what you desire and need to do in your curriculum for your homeschool as well as avoid the common problems that should come your way in the process.

Homeschooling is a term that is very extensive. There are several methods that can fit and be measureed under it. There are numerous different techniques that can be used.

Parents can opt to buy packaged curriculums that exactly focus on homeschoolers. Some decide to register their kids in correspondence programs, others acquire and make use of software and others combine everything.

As parents obtain more confidence as to their homeschooling capacities, they can decide on a less systematized approach.

When new or inexperienced to homeschooling, discovering the ideal and exact learning method for your kid will be a real challenge. Generally, the majority of private as well as public schools make use of a formal and conventional curriculum for each student, and as a parent, you might misguidedly be certain that you have to follow and keep on with that same course in your home.

Usually, parents start with homeschooling utilizing a complete set of curriculum package. However, several find the workload or structure too overwhelming; so they start to experiment and try out different methods of teaching.

The technique here is to determine a certain method that can accommodate the learning style of your child. As you come to be more proficient and knowledgeable and achieve certainty, you’ll find out useful, efficient and effective teaching and learning tools that will help your family reach educational independence and freedom.

Traditional and conventional methods of teaching are also explored here, along with some non-traditional styles and approaches that might amaze you. As a parent and a homeschooling teacher, you have several different curriculum options. Your child will benefit once you are well acquainted with all of them.

You know your child, so choose the best curriculum that will meet all his needs. Along with understanding and support, homeshooling will surely be a success!

For some reason you’ve decided to homeschool.

Is it because you don’t like or agree with the curriculum of the public schools? Or maybe you don’t want your child to be exposed to peer pressure before you’ve taught your child right and wrong?

Possibly it’s because you’d like for your child to attend private school but you just don’t have the finances to afford it.

Another possibility is that your child is a special needs child, maybe slower than normal, and you don’t trust the public schools to give him/her the special attention that you know they will need.

Whatever the reason, you’ve decided that you, as a parent, can do a better job of attending to and nurturing your child’s educational growth and learning than other alternatives available to you.

If you’re new to this, you’ll find that the biggest problem that you’ll encounter is that there’s almost no way to generalize the home school concept, because each case is different. There is no right and wrong. In fact – probably one of the unstated reasons you’ve chosen to do home schooling and one of the main benefits is that you get to pretty much create your own set of right and wrong rules.

You set the curriculum. And depending on what state you live in, you choose the instructional materials, the books, the hours, and so on.

And on the negative side, when you run into difficulties with your students (i.e., your kids) you and your family will have to resolve them yourself, with little or no help from the state.

No matter what your approach there are two things you are going to have to do:

1. You’re going to have to educate yourself about home schooling. This means renting or buying home school educational dvds. You should also make it a point to read books written by ordinary people who have gone through the very things you’re about to so you can avoid making their mistakes with your kids.

2. There is no nationwide agreement on what a home school accreditation program should look like or include. Each state, municipality, and school district is different. Unavoidably, you’re going to have to become familiar with and abide by the statues governing homeschooling in your particular state.

Aside from those two things, I think the basic thing you can give your home school child is a loving and supporting “classroom” environment .

Available to supplement classroom learning and help children achieve higher grades are Spectrum workbooks, a series that allows young learners to reinforce subjects they are learning in school.

Spectrum workbooks follow current teaching methodology and subject standards, according to editors at School Specialty Publishing. The books are written by educational experts in various subject areas. They are ideal for students who need to extend their learning in a specific subject.

This series covers nine subjects ranging from reading to test preparation. There are over 100 Spectrum titles in all for children Pre-K through eighth grade, each book cover distinguished by a starburst icon.

Spectrum’s instructional design offers young learners a smooth transition between each exercise and activity that is age appropriate, along with illustrations, graphs, diagrams and charts that visually support the concepts being taught. Assessments are included to track student progress, and each workbook has easy-to-understand directions and an answer key.

In the third grade reading workbook, for example, each lesson features an illustrated story followed by exercises that test comprehension. This allows students to get the practice they need in essential reading skills.

The reading workbook is a perfect supplement to a traditional school basal reading program since it combines activities that reinforce skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition and reading comprehension with a proven method for developing reading proficiency.

Spectrum has recently celebrated its 10th birthday and its sales have exceeded 15 million copies. These exceptional additions to home and classroom instructions sell for about 10 dollars in bookstores and teacher stores.

Homeschooling was once a rare educational method. Today it is well known and an accepted way to education your kids.

Most parents thinking of homeschooling have a difficult time deciding whether to do it or not. The following is a list 17 reasons why other parents are homeschooling their kids. And, there is one important question you must answer correctly if you expect to succeed in homeschooling. This will be given to you at the end of this article.

- Private school is to expensive
- Their children have problems learning in school or have a hard time getting along with other kids
- They have special health needs
- They are unhappy with the public school curriculum
- They want their kids to have a better education
- They enjoy homeschooling and being with their children
- They don’t want their kids to be badly influenced by other kid and learn their bad behaviors
- They want their kids to learn the skills they need to succeed in life
- They want their kids to receive an education that caters to their interests, ability level and aspirations
- They move around, following husbands work, and this is a way to keep the family together
- Their kids would get the individual attention they really needed
- It gives the kids a chance to become who they really are by giving them more freedom to express themselves than public schools would allow.
- The want to see their kid grow and turn into wonderful, capable, loving person.
- They want a way of life that allows the whole family to be together
- They feel they are releasing their kids to strangers to raise them and this is not what they want to do
- Their own educational philosophy greatly differs with the public school education.

So how do you decide whether to homeschool or not. Well, you’re going to need a lot of information. You need to learn about,

- academic research
- legal homeschool rulings
- homeschooling practicals
- schooling materials
- how much it will cost
- how to evaluate what you are doing

One more important thing you will need to find out. You need to know what it feels like to homeschool your kids day in and day out.

Finally, the most important question you have to answer if you are planning to homeschool your kids is:

Do you really enjoy being and spending time with your kids? The question is, if you enjoy spending a lot of time with your kids every day. You must like being with your kids most of the time and if you don’t then most likely, homeschooling is not for you.

As a homeschooler one of the most important tasks for you to accomplish in your child at an early age is getting them interested in and developing good reading habits. At an early age learning to recognize letters, the sounds they make and words they eventually form should be an activity and not a structured assignment. A great reading activity for kindergarten aged children, for example is to read to them.

A natural progression in your reading activities with your children is that after you read them to a passage from the story; have them paraphrase the story back to you. This will help you to understand what level of listening ability and understanding they are at, as well has help them to begin building their vocabulary as they work to find new words they can use with their description of the story they are giving back to you.

Good reading activities dont always have to occur at the house, or just before bedtime. While youre running errands around town or on vacation, perhaps have the kids begin to collect words from signs, or spell objects they see. Encourage them to learn different ways to describe objects see. Instead something big, it may by huge, or enormous… or even of gargantuan proportion! Have you child arrange the words they have collected into silly sentences or phrases. Even something as simple as collecting letters from signs, license plates, and such to work their way through the alphabet is a good kindergarten age reading activity.

Not in the car, or travel around much? Use every day items around the house to do the same thing. Labels, there are plenty of labels around the house. Actually put labels on everyday items around the house so your child can associate the spelling, and reading with a tangible item. Then, after a while, take the labels off the items and help your child read and re-label the house.

Once you get your creative juices flowing, youll come up with many more reading activities. The key is to make reading activities an every day part of their life. Make an effort to spend an hour a day reading more with an hour less of television. T.V. is an extremely passive thought processing activity. While reading and using ones imagination is a source of growth and a great foundation from which to build.

For many people, homeschooling is a desirable alternative to the education offered by the public and private school systems. When you homeschool your children you have the flexibility to create an educational curriculum more suited to their needs. Homeschooling also makes economic sense, especially when you consider the costs involved with sending multiple children to a private school. If you’ve made the decision to homeschool your children, the first step in establishing a viable curriculum is to read widely.

To begin with, you have to ensure that you educate yourself on a wide variety of topics. While it may be tempting to focus exclusively on books teaching you how to homeschool your children, you shouldn’t rely on these too heavily. Keep in mind that pedagogical method is only as important as your knowledge of a subject, and focusing your reading entirely on how to homeschool your children will leave you lacking in the practical knowledge necessary to execute it.

At first, the reading required in order to homeschool your children may seem daunting – after all, a teacher is only required to be knowledgeable on the subjects they teach, but you’re going to be teaching all of the subjects. Keep in mind, however, that you needn’t be an expert in every subject – one of the great things about homeschooling is that you can learn together with your child. Instead, it’s more important that you have a good general knowledge of the history of the subjects being taught.

In most cases, a good “history of” on the subjects you plan to teach should be sufficient. Because it is impractical to read an entire bibliography for multiple subjects, you want to instead read a couple books on each subject that provide you with a good homeschooling starting point. In other words, you’re not going to be an expert, but you’re going to know the general concepts and be able to answer basic questions. Most importantly, you’ll know which writing to explore further if you and your child’s interest takes you in that direction.

The amount that you have to read will depend of course on your child’s age and the level and depth of the subjects you’ll be teaching, but a good starting point is to read a standard book that a high school student would have to read for a given subject. Remember that specific areas of a subject can be explored as you go, so you needn’t be able to answer every question your child might have in depth before you start. Instead, you need a good knowledge of the history of the subject, so you can arrange a curriculum that makes sense in a liner way: you want to know how the subject works, and how it is taught. You want to know the “building blocks” – what concepts to teach first, and how to build on those first concepts.

By reading widely in this way you’ll arm yourself with the necessary tools for homeschooling your child effectively, and provide yourself with the basic knowledge from which you and your child can explore particular areas of subjects further.

If have decided that home schooling really is right for you and your kids, you will likely want to know what to do next. Here are some quick points for getting started with home schooling:

Locate your state’s home school group. You can do this online easily by typing in your state and the keyword home schooling at your favorite search engine. Then go to your state listing.

Locate your local support group for parents of home schooled kids. These groups will help you to get good tips from other parents and is a great place to find like-minded people to share your troubles etc.

Know the laws in your state about home schooling. If you have questions, arrange for an evaluation with your local school board so that you can verify that your child is approved for home schooling. They will also check for a proposal from you about home schooling your child

Get any magazines, books and/or other supplies that you will need in order for you to have steady resources on hand to offer tips etc.

What Happens next?

When it comes to the home schooling of your children, quite a few factors play into not just what you will do about it, but also how you will make sure that you are approved to do it. Like everything else, this is a process. Many people have questions that they need to answer about home schooling. As the parent/teacher of your child, you must do the following to get started with home schooling:

Develop your home schooling curriculum that is both approved by the school board or state, as well as meeting your ability to teach.

Schedule a meeting with the school board or state education officials so that they can offer you any help with tutors etc. that are approved. You will also be presenting your proposal at this meeting.

Get information about and register for evaluations with your school board or state to ensure that your child is meeting with the approved standards in your area.

Get yourself certified to teach your child

Create a home schooling proposal for what you are planning to teach your child and how you plan to go about it.

The court says clearly that school officials and parents must agree on a method of evaluation that may include one of the following approaches: standardized testing, periodic progress report, or dated work samples. Home visits may not be necessary as a condition of this approval.

Dated work samples mean just what they sound like in that, they are a few samples of work with dates on them. You do not have to compile an extensive portfolio in order to submit it to the school although you might like to keep these kinds of records for your own use.

Progress reports can also serve as your plan for the coming year if you include information about how current learning will be extended into the next year, and what new areas will be added. While the law does not specify that a home schooling plan needs to be submitted annually, many towns have come to expect them.

It is important for you to include in your education plan what form of evaluation you are planning to use. That way if the school later asks you for a form of evaluation that you’d prefer not to use, you can refer them to your approved education plan in which you already said that you would submit your preferred evaluation.

Adding a line in your annual report such as, an annual progress report/dated work sample/standardized test results will be submitted upon request; is a good idea if you aren’t sure whether or not they’ll ask you for anything. Of course, if they don’t ask, you don’t need to submit anything.

As with anything else, getting everything organized is the first step to getting off to a great start. Deciding to home school is a big decision, getting the paper work in order will keep everything flowing.

Its well documented that when children develop good reading skills early on, they are much more likely to be better learners and better educated. Reading is the foundation for success for all other subject matter and the level of success throughout life for the child.

Learning to read isnt an easy task for a child. This is why it is so very important that you as the parent is a model for reading and work with and encourage your child to read each and every day.

As a parent or homeschooling parent, you should help insure that your child develops essential skills associated with reading such as:

>	Use of language and vocabulary.

>	Having your child respond after listening to stories read short paragraphs and have your child tell you about what they just heard.

>	Lean and recognize the alphabet and letters use everyday items around your house to use as examples. For example, cut out big letters and have your child find items around the house that begin with that letter and stick the letter to them.

>	Work with your child to connect the sound the letters make to the spoken language.

>	Read and read often to your child so they know that reading is a daily activity.

>	Work daily with your child to add a new word to their vocabulary.

>	Discuss with your child what was just read. This helps you monitor their level of comprehension.

These skills are vitally important for the pre-first grade level reader. Once you child gets to the first grade level the focus becomes building upon these skills that the will set the stage for the child essentially for the rest of their lives. As a parent its not enough to merely incorporate these skills into your childs daily activities, you keep your fingers on the pulse of your childs progress and understanding. At this early age, it is critical to get the reading journey off on the right foot.

At its simplest form, reading is a skill. Just like any other skill, it takes practice to become proficient at it. In fact, reading is such an important skill it takes more practice than a child will receive if they attend a traditional school. As a parent you need to augment the schools reading program with daily reading time at home. If you are homeschooling, make reading a daily top priority type of activity.

Introduce your child to your local library as soon as you can. Get them signed up for summer reading programs. Set aside an area in your home where your child can have and develop a library all their own. Put their favorite chair in their library or where they like to read and have you read to them.

Reading truly is fundamental to education and successes. Without good reading skills, much of life will always be a struggle. Build a sound and solid foundation for your child by ensuring early on that you help establish a love for reading in your child and success will follow.

Ten years ago, the term online schooling might not be very appealing; just like the iron horses in the early part of the 19th century or an airplane in the beginning of the 20th century. Internet was still underdeveloped in 1996 compared to what we have now. And the conventional today may not be acceptable by the general population in 1996.

But we dont live in 1996 anymore. We are now in the era where everything is possible and acceptable. Just like studying outside the school, in front of your computer at the very comforts of your home. This is called online schooling.

Thinking of entering online schooling can arouse discomfort for some. This is quite understandable since it is not the usual way of learning just like those people who have tried airplane as a way to travel for the first time. However, with the reputation online schools are gaining, the way students learn is transforming in an unconventional way.

If you are one of those students who are considering this relatively new form of learning, here are the things you should know- the pros and cons of online schooling:

Pros

No time wasted on travelingWhether you live in the most remote town in the United States (provided you have an internet connection) or at the top of the tallest building in your city, you can always be on time to study your lessons. Online schooling eliminates the time you have to prepare to dress up for school. It also removes the time you have to spend sitting on the taxi or waiting for the green light. With online schooling, your home and your classroom are the same.

Can attend home needs anytimeFor people who need to attend important things around the home, online schooling works best. For instance: you have a baby to take care of or you have a several things that must be done around the house. If before you have to find ways to squeeze all the items in your to-do-list for one whole day, now online schooling will give you more time on other things as it eliminates the time you have to spend on preparation for school.

No more classmates to mindWhen you get online schooling, the classroom is all yours. You dont have to fight on your seat, you dont have to get along with a group, and you dont have to be nice or rude to others.

Cons

Online school competenceThere are many online schools to choose from. The question is: would you be able to land on a job after you have spent all your time and money on your chosen online school? One advice is: do research on the competency of several online schools and consider the credit they can give once you step into the working world.

Personal competenceCan you learn on your own or should you require a board and a talking professor to absorb the lesson? There are some students who are better studying alone. There are some who are not. If you think you are capable of learning without the need of the actual classroom discussion, then you can consider online schooling.

Environment cooperationIs your home fit for studying? Can you concentrate with all the destructions you can get in your home? Many homes are not fit to become a school. It may be because there are children around, or the neighborhoods dogs are always barking, or your home is simply not conducive to learning.

All these only say one thing: home schooling is not for everyone. Do more research and consideration before entering home schooling program. If you think you are fit and you can benefit more on home schooling, then it is all up to you.
